Nursery Closet Storage Options
Closet basis: 63 in wide by 23 in deep reach-in closet with centered 48 in solid white shaker-style French doors, leaving 7.5 in side returns on each side. Existing condition includes a full-width shelf at 60 in above the floor with a clothes rod just below. Ceiling height was not provided, so the diagrams assume a typical 96 in closet height and call out any height-sensitive option.
Photorealistic Mockups
Generated images are design intent mockups, not installation drawings. The dimensioned SVGs below are the controlling layout studies.
A. No-demo IKEA nursery bins under the existing rod
Why it works now
- Fast, reversible, and cheap.
- Baby clothes are short, so hanging above 37 in bins is still usable.
- Bins become kid-accessible toy, shoe, pajama, and dress-up storage later.
Limits
- Longer kid clothes eventually need one bin tower removed or the rod raised.
- The original 60 in shelf is low for long-term vertical storage.
- Use wall anchors even with low furniture in a child's room.
A2. No-demo IKEA KALLAX 2x4 low cubbies
Why it works
- One clean piece, lower than TROFAST, with good hanging clearance above.
- Best no-demo option for toys, board books, shoes, and future kid storage.
- DRONA boxes or drawer inserts can hide smaller nursery supplies.
Compromise
- It is deeper than TROFAST, so the closet feels more filled.
- Outer cubbies sit about 4.8 in behind each side return.
- Bins are less toddler-friendly than TROFAST pull-out tubs unless you use soft fabric cubes.
B. IKEA AURDAL adjustable closet system
Why it works
- Good depth for a 23 in closet without feeling jammed.
- Only 0.625 in per side extends beyond the 48 in opening.
- Adjustable rods, shelves, and drawers can change as clothing sizes grow.
Watchouts
- Requires removing or abandoning the existing 60 in shelf and rod.
- Confirm clear height before buying an 87 in system.
- Side gaps are useful for a small hamper or vertical off-season items, not daily drawers.
C. IKEA PAX high-density deep insert
Why it works
- Most drawer storage from IKEA parts.
- Three narrow bays keep the center pull-outs inside the 48 in door opening.
- Side bays can hold hanging clothes, shelves, blankets, and shoes.
Compromise
- The depth is the problem: 22 7/8 in inside a 23 in closet leaves no margin for baseboard, bowed walls, or door hardware.
- Do not put drawers or baskets in side-return zones unless they fully clear the opening.
- Assembly inside the closet may be necessary because the frames nearly fill the depth.
D. Custom grow-with-child built-in
Why it works
- Uses the full 63 in width without wasting the 7.5 in returns.
- Side towers can be fitted with pull-out bins so hidden storage remains reachable.
- Rods and shelves can move from baby double-hang to kid single-hang plus shelves.
Specification notes
- Use adjustable shelf pin rows in all vertical bays.
- Keep center pull-outs within the 48 in door opening.
- Use anti-tip anchoring, soft-close hardware, and rounded or eased exposed edges.

Decision Notes
Recommended path
- Choose Option A if the nursery needs storage quickly and the existing shelf/rod are in decent condition.
- Choose Option A2 if you want the same no-demo approach but with cleaner long-term toy, book, and shoe cubbies.
- Choose Option B if you want a real closet system without committing to custom millwork.
- Choose Option D if this room will stay a child's bedroom and you want the closet to solve clothes, toys, linens, hamper, and shoes in one pass.
Measure before ordering
- Ceiling height, especially for the 87 in AURDAL option.
- Exact interior depth after baseboard, back wall texture, and door hardware are accounted for.
- French-door hinge swing and whether the full 48 in opening is actually clear at drawer height.
- Existing shelf depth and fastener condition if keeping it for Option A.
